Affiliate marketing could be very lucrative for webmasters if implemented right. Unfortunately, it often isn’t – especially for newbies – because its not as easy as just posting an ad code on your website and sitting back like you would for CPC and CPM Ad networks. From choosing the right affiliate program to not linking directly to affiliate products in your posts (so you don’t keep sending traffic to affiliate programs you no longer wish to promote), there are a number of tweaks you could implement to make affiliate marketing work for you.
Two popular affiliate programs among Nigerian Tech. Bloggers like me are Jumia and Konga affiliate programs, both of which I’ve been using for well over 3 years now. For Bloggers who would like to know which of the two is better, I might not be able to give a straight answer but will do a comparison (from my experience) based on several criteria then leave you to decide which is better for your Blog. Fair enough?
Joining / Signing Up
Signing up on both is pretty easy and straight-forward; takes well less than 5 minutes. They both require you to supply your website’s URL and this makes sense because an affiliate without a website would most likely spam other platforms to promote his / her affiliate links; they don’t want that. Both manually approve affiliates and their requirements are pretty moderate (no traffic requirements) so far you have a decent website (its recommended your content doesn’t promote Violence, Hate, Adult or Illegal stuff).

Supported Countries
If you don’t know what countries the bulk of your traffic comes from then you are lacking one vital piece of information. Imagine marketing a product on Jumia or Konga to someone in the UK or USA? Chances that this lead will convert are pretty slim if you ask me. To the best of my knowledge, Konga affiliate program covers only Nigeria while Jumia affiliate program covers Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Ghana, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Algeria, Uganda and South Africa

Promotion Tools
Jumia provides affiliate banners, links and a link builder (to monetize a product URL). Konga on the other hand provides affiliate banners, links, a deep link generator (to monetize a product URL), a general affiliate link (monetize any Konga URL simply by appending ?k_id=YourKongaID , Direct Links (leads originating from your website are automatically credited to you without having to append your affiliate ID) and Affiliate Link protector (cloaks your affiliate link using a php; html or javascript file on your server).

Statistics / Reporting
Jumia allows you to view your conversions for a preset time frame. You can also view approved, pending, cancelled or rejected sales / commissions. There’s no way to view the total approved sales for the current month (to help you know how much to expect). Konga on the other hand allows you view the total pending commissions and total approved commissions for the current month so you know how much to expect. Konga also lets you view the top referrer URL (best performing links / pages on your website), Raw Clicks (pages on your website from which your affiliate links / banners were clicked, product categories and the IP addresses) and Commissions (approved, pending or cancelled commissions).

Minimum Payout
Konga recently reviewed their minimum payout from NGN 10,000 to NGN 5,000. Jumia’s minimum payout is NGN2,500.

Promoting your affiliate links via Pay Per Click (PPC) ad networks
Konga allows you promote your affiliate links via PPC ad networks whereas Jumia doesn’t.

I wouldn’t consider either technical support lightening fast or with many options to choose from. They’re just moderate.

That makes sense. The two most considered features are minimum payout and commission model / rate. Jumia Wins on both.
I’ve registered with jumia but something’s ain’t clear to me… On there tool section they’ve got the banner and link builder. The banner section has subid 1- 5 with image url, ad url, banner code. Am I suppose to add these three codes ? And the subids, what are they used for and how can I make use of it.
On the link builder section, there’s a field for page url. Is it gonna be my blog url or something else, it also has the 1- 5 subid thing with the final url….
It’s my first try with affiliate, I guess that’s why I find it difficult to understand. Please guide me on that

Banner
After you choose a banner, you’ll be provided with 3 options; image url, Ad url and banner code. You’re to add the banner code to your website. If you want to create a text link instead of a banner then you may use the Ad url to create the text link. I don’t think you’ll need the image URL unless you want to make customizations
Link Builder
Page URL is the Jumia link you wish to promote (for example, a link to a product on Jumia). subid are optional to include. Think of subids as tags. If you wish to sort your ads (based on properties like size, location you place them etc), you could tag them using subids so you can monitor how each ad is performing against others. You don’t have to use subids, just leave blank.
The Final URL is the monetized link created by Jumia based on what you entered under page URL. After you input the page URL (a link to a product on Jumia), you then copy the final URL as its what you’re supposed to use (to ensure the sale is tracked and credited to you)
