In this guide, we’ll treat (with pictures) how to install Windows 7 using either the Windows CD / DVD or a USB drive. The procedures for installing Windows 7 and 8 are almost the same (See https://www.hovatek.com/blog/how-to-install-windows-8-with-and-without-the-operating-system-cd-dvd/ ) except that Windows 8 might require you to enter the licence key before installation.
Part 1: Getting the Operating System (OS) files in bootable format
If you already have the Operating System CD/DVD then skip this step. If on the other hand the PC in question doesn’t have a CD/DVD drive or you don’t have the OS CD/DVD then this part is for you
Requirements
- USB Drive (over 4GB)
- PC
- Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool
- Windows 7 ISO file (or download @ Microsoft website)
Procedure
- Launch Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool and click on “Browse”
- In the window that pops us, select the ISO file then click “Open”
- Click “Next”
- Under Choose media type, select “USB Device”
- Select the USB device of your Choice then click “Begin copying” . If prompted to format it, Click Yes/ OK
- Once the task is 100% complete, close Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool and remove the USB drive
Now that you have bootable OS files, you can proceed to Part 2.
Part 2: Installing Windows 7 using CD/DVD/Bootable USB drive
Now, insert the Windows 7 CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive. If you’re using a bootable USB drive then connect it to the PC. Once the Windows 7 CD/DVD is inserted or the bootable USB drive is connected, shutdown the PC then follow the steps below.
Boot the PC. When prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD, tap any key
* Note: If you do not get this prompt and the PC just boots normally then change boot order to boot from CD / USB before Hard disk (either in BIOS or using Function buttons at the top)
Once you tap any key, Windows will start loading files
After Windows is done loading files, select Language, Time format and Keyboard layout then click “Next”
Click “Install Now”
Wait till Setup is complete
Select the OS you wish to install then click “Next”
Tick “I accept the licence terms” then click “Next”
Select Custom (Advanced)
Highlight the partition you wish to install Windows to [take not of Drive options (Advanced)] at the bottom
If you wish to format the partition, click Drive options (Advanced) the select “Format” else, just click “Next”
Windows will begin installation, just leave it (don’t touch anything even if it restarts) till it gets to the step below
In the Set up Windows dialogue box, type your preferred PC name then click “Next”
Enter your preferred password or just leave all fields blank then click “Next”
In the Licence dialogue box, enter your Licence key if you have one or just skip this step
Click “Use Recommended Settings”
Select your time zone then click “Next”
Select your network (If you aren’t sure what to pick, choose “Public”)
Wait while Windows sets up your Desktop
Congratulations! Windows is now setup
